Suggestions about the Greek loan words in Coptic

1- A suggestion of abbreviating some Greek loan words in Coptic in conversation, not in texts.

About the loan words already borrowed to Coptic:

If we read the title of the gospel of Saint Matthew in Horner which consists of Greek loan words to Coptic we find the following variants:

Ⲉⲩⲁⲅⲅⲉⲗⲓⲟⲛ ⲕⲁⲧⲁ Ⲙⲁⲧⲑⲉⲟⲛ,

Ⲉⲩⲁⲅⲅⲉⲗⲓⲟ ⲕⲁⲧⲁ Ⲙⲁⲧⲑⲉⲟ,

Ⲉⲩⲁⲅⲅⲉⲗⲓⲟ ⲕⲁⲧⲁ Ⲙⲁⲧⲑⲉⲟc,

One notices that the loan words in this phrase have been borrowed in several spellings generally different from the original word.

This is how our ancestors sometimes dealt with loan words.

My suggestion is that when we revive the Coptic Language, we need some flexibility in shaping the loan words, to serve an important aim, which is being similar to the spirit of the of the Coptic Language of which most of the words are short, & helping fluency & writing poetry:

e.g. if needed,deleting ⲉⲣ & deleting some endings from most verbs

 eg ⲁⲅⲓⲁⲍ for ⲉⲣⲁⲅⲓⲁⲍⲓⲛ

(deleting ⲓⲛ from ⲁⲅⲓⲁⲍⲓⲛ)

And ⲉⲥⲑⲁⲛ  for ⲉⲣⲉⲥⲑⲁⲛⲉⲥⲑⲉ

(deleting ⲉⲥⲑⲉ from ⲉⲥⲑⲁⲛⲉⲥⲑⲉ).

2- Suggestions about new loan words of Arabic origin:

I suggest that we use them with the Arabic definite article: ⲁⲗ, when needed, instead of ⲡⲓ or ϯ.

This is on analogy of what some Copts had already done : cf. Crum, 198a, Ⲙⲟⲟⲩ ⲛ̀ⲁⲗⲃⲟⲩⲗ:

Ⲁⲗ: definite article.

Ⲡⲓⲃⲟⲩⲗ had not been used in this phrase, but ⲁⲗⲃⲟⲩⲗ (the beans)

If the phrase needs a possessive adjective, I suggest using ⲛ̀ⲧⲏⲓ, etc. instead of the possessive adjective.

e.g. ⲁⲗⲍⲁⲕⲁⲁϩ ⲛ̀ⲧⲁϥ.

instead of ⲧⲉϥⲍⲁⲕⲁⲁϩ.

(ⲁⲗⲍⲁⲕⲁⲁϩ is an Arabic word generally meaning money given to the poor).

١- اقتراح باختصار الكلمات المستعارة في اللغة القبطية، في المحادثة وليس في النصوص:

عن الكلمات المستعارة في اللغة القبطية:

إن قرأنا عنوان إنجيل متى في Horner الذي يتكون من كلمات يونانية مستعارة إلى اللغة القبطية نجد الأشكال المختلفة الآتية:

Ⲉⲩⲁⲅⲅⲉⲗⲓⲟⲛ ⲕⲁⲧⲁ Ⲙⲁⲧⲑⲉⲟⲛ,

يلاحظ أن الكلمات المستعارة في هذه العبارة تمت استعارتها بتهجيات متعددة تختلف عموما عن الكلمة الأصلية. هذه هي طريقة التي تعامل بها أجدادنا أحيانا مع كلمات مستعارة.

وإقتراحي هو أننا عندما نحيي اللغة القبطية نحتاج بعض المرونة في تهيئة شكل الكلمات المستعارة لتخدم هدفا هاما هو أن تشبه روح اللغة القبطية التي معظم كلماتها قصيرة، ولمساعدة السلاسة، وكتابة الشعر.

مثلا: عند اللزوم نلغي ⲉⲣ 

ونلغي نهايات اغلب الافعال.

مثلا نستخدم

 ⲁⲅⲓⲁⲍ

بدلا من

 ⲉⲣⲁⲅⲓⲁⲍⲓⲛ

أي إلغاء ⲓⲛ من نهاية (ⲁⲅⲓⲁⲍⲓⲛ)

و

ⲉⲥⲑⲁⲛ

بدلا من 

 ⲉⲣⲉⲥⲑⲁⲛⲉⲥⲑⲉ

أي إلغاء

ⲉⲥⲑⲉ 

من

ⲉⲥⲑⲁⲛⲉⲥⲑⲉ.

٢- بخصوص كلمات مستعاره جديده من اصل عربي

 اقترح ان نستخدمها مع اداه التعريف العربيه "ال ⲁⲗ" عندما نحتاجها بدلا من ⲡⲓ أو ϯ. 

وهذا قياسا على ما فعله بعض الأقباط سابقا فإننا ان رجعنا الى كرم صفحه 198 أ:

Crum, 198a, Ⲙⲟⲟⲩ ⲛ̀ⲁⲗⲃⲟⲩⲗ:

Ⲁⲗ: definite article.

نجد "ال" مستخدمه كأداة تعريف كلمه "الفول" في اللغة القبطية. أي أن كلمه ⲡⲓⲃⲟⲩⲗ لم تستخدم بل استخدمنا ⲁⲗⲃⲟⲩⲗ.

 واذا احتاجت العباره صفه ملكيه ممكن ان نستخدم ⲛ̀ⲧⲏⲓ الى اخره، بدلا من صفه الملكيه القبطيه مثلا "الزكاه بتاعته"، بدلا من "زكاته".

e.g. ⲁⲗⲍⲁⲕⲁⲁϩ ⲛ̀ⲧⲁϥ.

  About borrowing verbs as loan words to Coptic from the Arabic language: ---  Contrary to my previous suggestion of deleting ⲉⲣ from the Greek loan words already borrowed by Coptic, l confirm the necessity of using "ⲉⲣ+the infinitive" when we borrow in the future an Arabic verb (colloquial or classic) to the Coptic Language. (sometimes ϯ, ϣⲉⲡ, or another verb instead of ⲉⲣ) . This is what the Copts did when they borrowed Greek verbs.   Coptic/Latin Transliteration  2021 الدلالات الصوتية للغة القبطية مكتوبة بالحروف اللاتينية (الإنجليزية) ---  Writing the Coptic Language in Latin letters is sometimes needed, i.e. a Coptic-Latin transliteration is needed.
